So you may be confused as to why they are different.Īn Americano is made by adding and espresso shot to water after the brewing process. What do a Lungo, Americano and long black all have in common? Yup, espresso and water. A lungo will have smokier, burnt notes in comparison to other drinks in the “espresso” family. This is because brewing involves several different chemical processes. Lungo shots also have less crema.įor some a bitter tasting coffee may sound delightful but to some others it will leave a bitter taste in their mouths, literally.Ībove all, it is important to note that a Lungo is not a half-strength shot and that the change in flavour goes beyond simply being diluted by water.
Because a Lungo shot takes longer to pull than a regular espresso shot, it alters the extraction time and can lead to a more bitter taste. Espresso has a bold, rich flavor and the crema can be debated as the most enjoyable part of an espresso shot. But while the drink is more diluted, it’s also bitter.Įspresso has an intense flavor because of the smaller amount of water being pushed through all the coffee grounds. The flavor of a Lungo is much more muted than that of espresso or ristretto (a shot of half the water). Extraction time of the dose is determined by the variety of coffee beans which is usually a blend of Arabica and Robusta, their grind and the pressure of the machine. You will need to adjust the water and extraction time until you perfect the taste. The temperature and amount of grounds would stay the same as it would for a normal shot of espresso. If you do have control over these two elements then you will be able to create our very own Lungo. In this instance make sure you are able to adjust the extraction (or pull) time and also the amount of water used. If you like a more hands-on approach to brewing your coffee your machine might be more involved.
Nespresso machines have their own dedicated Lungo pods to choose from. Conveniently, most espresso machines will have a Lungo preset button. If you would like to make a Lungo at home, the easiest way to make a Lungo coffee is with an espresso machine. Size is not the only difference in a Lungo. The increase in water used means that the shot itself will be bigger resembling the size of a doppio, or double espresso. This results in a very strong taste of Espresso Lungo, which has a high proportion of the coffee’s taste and aroma.
Water is pressed through finely-ground coffee powder over a longer period of time so that many aromatic flavour components are also added to the cup. On the other hand, a Lungo will use double the amount of water and therefore take double the length of time. Ideally, a shot of normal espresso should use 30ml of water and take between 18 to 30 seconds to pull.
